What is Amazon Nova?
Amazon Nova is a family of AI models available through Amazon Bedrock. Model names do not describe one interchangeable capability. AWS documents understanding, creative and speech models; supported inputs and features depend on the model and version. Use the official AWS model documentation as the starting point.
Understanding the model categories
In the Nova v1 family, Micro is text-only, while Lite and Pro support multimodal understanding. Canvas is designed for image generation and Reel for video generation. Nova Pro should not be described as a text-only model, and Reel is the correct product name. Context limits are measured in tokens where specified, not interchangeable character counts.
AWS now maintains separate documentation for newer Nova versions. Check the exact model ID, supported region and API before implementation rather than treating a feature of one version as a feature of every Nova model.
Choose a workload before choosing a model
Write down the input, desired output and acceptable failure conditions. A document assistant needs reliable retrieval and source references. A support assistant needs an escalation route. An image workflow needs asset review. A model that performs well in one task may require a different prompt, configuration or review process in another.
A practical evaluation checklist
- Quality: build a representative set of examples with expected answers and clearly defined failure cases.
- Cost: measure usage per completed task, including retries, retrieval and supporting services.
- Latency: measure the user-visible response time and timeout behavior.
- Data access: decide which records the assistant can read and how access follows user permissions.
- Review: define which outputs require approval before they are sent or used.
- Recovery: document a fallback when the model or an external integration is unavailable.
From a prototype to an operational service
Start with a limited workflow and compare its results against the current process. Keep an audit trail of requests, decisions and approved actions. Treat model output as something to validate; using an AI service alone does not prove legal compliance or that confidential information is protected in every configuration.
